| Isotretinoin use has been associated with a number of cases of pseudotumor cerebri, some of which involved coadministration of tetracyclines.1 In the single case reported with acitretin, the patient was not taking tetracycline.2 Various tetracyclines have been associated with pseudotumor cerebri.3 This suggests the risk is increased if a tetracycline is taken with isotretinoin or acitretin. However, it remains to be determined if the reaction is caused by an additive or synergistic effect. Therefore, avoid concomitant use of isotretinoin or acitretin and tetracyclines. Early signs and symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri include headache, nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, and papilledema. The basis for this monograph is information on file with the manufacturer. Published clinical data are needed to further assess this interaction. However, because of the increased risk of benign intracranial hypertension, clinical evaluation of this interaction in humans is not likely to be forthcoming. | |
